Wilshire Indexes

Wilshire 5000

  • Currently over 7,000 companies, it represents all stocks listed on all three exchanges

Wilshire 4500

  • All stocks except those listed on the S&P 500

Wilshire Mid Cap 750

  • The top 750 of the 4500


Russel Indexes

Russel 3000

  • The 3,000 largest market-cap companies. Begun in 1984, it was back-dated to 1979.

Russel 1000

  • The top 1000 of the 3000

Russel 2000

  • The bottom 2,000 of the Russell 3000, this is the most widely followed small-cap index.

Barra Indexes

Barra Growth Index

  • The 250 companies that make up the half of the S&P 500 with the highest price-to-book ratios. The book value of a company is what it claims it is worth if all assets were sold and all liabilities were paid.

Barra Value Index

  • The 250 of the S&P 500 with the lowest price-to-book ratios.

There are also Barra growth and value indexes for the S&P 400 and 600.
